Opel is shifting its electric vehicle strategy

Opel, one of the long-established brands in the automotive world, has abandoned its previously announced plan to sell only electric vehicles in Europe starting in 2028. The company announced that it will now keep hybrid and internal combustion engine vehicles in its product line as long as there is demand. This decision is notable as a significant step back in Opel’s strategy for an all-electric future.

Opel abandons electric vehicle decision

In a presentation at Stellantis EV Day in 2021, Opel’s former CEO, Michael Lohscheller, stated that the brand would continue to offer only electric vehicles in the European market by 2028. However, the latest announcement indicates that this ambitious plan is no longer valid. Opel is maintaining its current “multi-energy” strategy.

Under this strategy, it continues to simultaneously launch vehicles with both electric and plug-in hybrid and internal combustion engines. This makes the brand the first German manufacturer to offer different powertrain options in each model segment.

The company’s latest statement stated, “This strategy does not have to be limited to 2028; it may change depending on demand.” This clear statement demonstrates that Opel will closely monitor market dynamics and consumer demands in the transition to electric vehicles.

While electric models are particularly emphasized in key markets like Germany, the UK, and France, it appears that internal combustion engine vehicle options will continue to be offered in other markets.

Opel’s decision appears to be in line with the general trend in the automotive sector. The brand joins giants like Volvo, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and BMW, which have similarly suspended their electric-only transition goals.

This situation reinforces expectations that demand for electric vehicles has not yet reached expected levels and that internal combustion engine vehicles will remain on the market for some time. Opel’s move also signals that the sector’s major transformation will not proceed as rapidly as anticipated.
